Health and safety at UTS
UTS is committed to providing a safe and healthy work and study environment for all UTS staff and students.
In addition to the health and safety responsibilities that everyone at UTS have, there are further responsibilities for UTS academic staff members. As a UTS academic staff member, you must be aware of your health and safety responsibilities, to fulfill these responsibilities you need to understand the principles of risk management.
You should know what to do:
In an emergency
Dial
- 6 from any internal phone, or
- 1800 249 559 from mobile phones (everyone who has a mobile phone on campus should add this number to their contacts).
You should be familiar with the UTS evacuation procedures. UTS: Facilities management provide details of the evacuation procedures, and the Escape from UTS video which shows how to evacuate UTS.
When an accident or incident happens
If you are involved in any accident or incident (including a near miss) at UTS it must be reported. Find out more about reporting an accident or incident at UTS, managers and supervisors have responsibilities to undertaken investigations as part of the reporting process.
If someone is injured, ensure that they receive first aid and/or medical treatment.
If you see, or are told about, a hazard or risk
Use a risk management process, in consultation with staff, to identify, assess and control the hazard or risk.
Training
All UTS staff are encouraged to complete the online Safety and Wellbeing Essentials training module which covers the health and safety basics.
All UTS academic staff are required to attend the EHS for Academics training session which covers your legal responsibilities as a supervisor.
Managing risks
UTS: Safety and wellbeing provides details of practical application of health and safety risk management at UTS for a variety of activities, and hazards. At a minimum, UTS managers and supervisors should be familiar with details on:
- curriculum,
- clinical and industrial placements,
- overseas travel,
- computer comfort which includes how to setup your computer workstation, and some stretch exercises, and
- manual handling.

Session content
This session is for academic staff as they have supervisory responsibilities. The session will give you the opportunity to enhance your knowledge and practical application of the health and safety system at UTS and the tools and resources available to help you fulfill your health and safety responsibilities. Areas covered include:

- Responsibilities of academic supervisors
- The health and safety risk management approach at UTS
- EHS Planning process.
