Health and safety responsibilities

All staff, students, contractors and visitors at UTS have health and safety responsibilities. They must:

  • take reasonable care of, and cooperate with actions taken to protect, the health and safety of both themselves and others,

  • follow safe work practices as provided by their supervisor, including the proper use of any personal protective equipment supplied,

  • seek information or advice from a supervisor before performing new or unfamiliar tasks,

  • report all health and safety accidents, incidents and hazards to their supervisor as soon as is practicable,

  • follow the emergency evacuation procedures, and

  • support workplace injury management and return-to-work programs in their work areas.

UTS staff can view the operational environment, health and safety plans for their faculty or unit via the online management system.

There are additional health and safety responsibilities for:

Safety and Wellbeing Essentials

Health, safety and wellbeing online training module for all UTS staff and students.

Module content

Covers the health, safety and welbeing basics, such as:

  • finding and fixing hazards
  • reporting accidents and incidents
  • first aid and emergency response
  • ergonomic set-up of your computer workstation
  • tips for safe manual handling
  • wellbeing at UTS

Re-training frequency

Staff are required to undertake refresher training every two years.

15-20 minutes

EHS for supervisors and managers

Health and safety training session for support staff with supervisory or managerial responsibilities.

Session content

This session will give you the opportunity to enhance your knowledge and practical application of the health and safety system at UTS and the tools and resources available to help you fulfil your health and safety responsibilities. Areas covered include:

  • legislation,
  • supervisor and manager responsibilities,
  • risk management approach at UTS, and
  • EHS Planning process.

Re-training frequency

Supervisors and managers are required to undertake refresher training every four years.

Session duration

1½ hours

Session availability & booking

Details are available for all scheduled Safety & Wellbeing events.

EHS for Academics training sessions

Health and safety training session for academic staff.

Session content

This session is for academic staff as they have supervisory responsibilities. The session will give you the opportunity to enhance your knowledge and practical application of the health and safety system at UTS and the tools and resources available to help you fulfill your health and safety responsibilities. Areas covered include:

  • Legislation
  • Responsibilities of academic supervisors
  • The health and safety risk management approach at UTS
  • EHS Planning process.

Re-training frequency

Academic staff are required to undertake refresher training every four years.
