Preventing injury and illness
To preventing injury and illness, UTS aims to integrate health and safety risk management into everything it does.
UTS managers and supervisors in control of areas where health and safety hazards exist have a legal responsibility to:
- identify all hazards,
- assess the risk of these hazards, and
- take action to eliminate or minimise the risk.
To fulfill this responsibility all managers and supervisors need to understand the risk management principles.
Safety & Wellbeing provides details of risk management processes that are practical applications of health and safety risk management for various UTS activities, details are grouped by:
- work environments,
- activities, and
- hazards.
What is a hazard?
A hazard is anything with the potential to cause damage to people, the environment, property, plant or equipment.
What is a risk?
Risk is the chance that an event will occur that will impact upon the objectives of UTS.
For example,
risk is the chance of harm to people, property and the environment.
It is measured in terms of consequence and likelihood.
