Safety and wellbeing information for managers and supervisors

Health and safety at UTS

UTS is committed to providing a safe and healthy work environment for all UTS staff.

In addition to the health and safety responsibilities that everyone at UTS has, as a UTS manager or supervisor you must do whatever is reasonably practical to ensure that both the workplace and the work itself is safe. Thoroughly inducting staff to the work area(s) under their control is part of this responsibility. Find out more about managers and supervisors health and safety responsibilities. To fulfill these responsibilities, you need to understand the principles of risk management.

You should know what to do:

  • In an emergency

    Dial

    • 6 from any internal phone, or
    • 1800 249 559 from mobile phones (everyone who has a mobile phone on campus should add this number to their contacts).

    You should be familiar with the UTS evacuation procedures. UTS: Facilities management provide details of the evacuation procedures, and the Escape from UTS video which shows how to evacuate UTS.

  • When an accident or incident happens

    If you are involved in any accident or incident (including a near miss) at UTS it must be reported. Find out more about reporting an accident or incident at UTS, managers and supervisors have responsibilities to undertaken investigations as part of the reporting process.

    If someone is injured, ensure that they receive first aid and/or medical treatment.

  • If you see, or are told about, a hazard or risk

    Use a risk management process, in consultation with staff, to identifying, assess and control the hazard or risks.

Training

All UTS staff are encouraged to attend the Safety and Wellbeing Essentials training session which covers the health and safety basics.

UTS managers and supervisors should also attend EHS for supervisors and managers.
