Consultation within the health and safety management system
The OHS Regulation 2001 outlines three options for consultative mechanisms:
- OHS Committees
- OHS Representatives
- Other agreed arrangements
Consultative mechanisms at UTS
UTS has a consultative mechanism that can be classed as "other agreed arrangements".
There are components to the UTS consultative mechanisms that are:
- strategic, UTS-wide, and
- operational, at faculty, unit or work area levels.
Over time, the UTS consultative mechanism has been reviewed to ensure continual improvement.
The consultation mechanism was developed, and has been reviewed and improved over time during a process of consultation with:
The legislative requirements for employers to consult on health and safety issues is outlined in the principal health and safety legislation, and WorkCover NSW's Code of practice for consultation 2001 (opens an external site).
The overall intent is to ensure that employers consult with their employees so that they can:
.. contribute to the making of decisions affecting their health safety and welfare at work and involves providing employees with relevant information and giving them the opportunity to express their views. These views are to be valued and taken into account by the employer.
