Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Corporate Services') Safety and Wellbeing Advisory Committee


Overview

The purpose of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Corporate Services') Safety and Wellbeing Advisory Committee is to ensure a coordinated, strategic and consultative approach to health and safety management.

The committee develops, oversights and monitors the UTS Safety and Wellbeing Plan.

Key projects for the next few years relate to:

  • training and information on accountabilities specifically mandating supervisor training for support and academic staff and improving induction for all
  • on-line information resources for casual academics
  • on-line induction training for staff and students
  • health and safety risk management in construction, research, curriculum, fieldwork and clinical placements, travel, procurement, events and school visits
  • emergency and crisis management
  • staff and student safety and wellbeing including mental health and resilience
  • introduction of the on-line hazard, accident and incident reporting (for security, OHS, environmental and insurance reports)
  • the Safe@UTS program and website.

The committee has representatives from:

  • each of the UTS Senior Executives
  • high-risk faculties and units,
  • academic and administrative units with responsibility for implementation of health and safety programs,
  • industrial unions,
  • student representative groups, and
  • management.

The committee meets every three months and deals with strategic and policy issues, as well as UTS-wide hazards and issues.


Terms of reference

The terms of reference of the Committee are:

  • To establish, monitor and continuously improve a safety and wellbeing management system appropriate to the structure, values, culture and practice of the University;

  • To develop, monitor and report on the safety and wellbeing plan which responds to the legislative requirements and legal precedence, current and emerging risks, workers’ compensation data, staff survey results and other relevant measures;

  • To identify strategies to integrate EHS risk management into the core functions of the University i.e. research, teaching and learning, operational practices and feed these strategies into the UTS safety and wellbeing plan and other relevant UTS plans;

  • To establish, monitor and improve mechanisms to consult with staff and students on health and safety issues;

  • To identify strategies to drive the implementation of the safety and wellbeing management system at faculty and unit level through EHS plans and other strategies;

  • To coordinate the development of strategies for the practical management of hazards which potentially present a risk to health, safety or the environment;

  • To support the promotion of health and safety at UTS;

  • To report annually to the Vice-Chancellor and recommend any UTS wide action to ensure UTS has an appropriate and practical Safety and Wellbeing management system.

The committee reports to the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor every twelve months on overall progress against the UTS safety and wellbeing plan.
