Nomination and training or re-certification of first aid officers

First aid officers are required to hold a current Senior First Aid certificate / Apply First Aid statement of attainment, which is awarded upon successful completion of the two-day Senior First Aid or Apply First Aid training course. This certificate/statement of attainment remains current for three years.

To retain continuity of appointment as a first aid officer, prior to the end of this three year period of certification, first aid officers must successful completion of a one-day Apply First Aid re-certification. Re-certification should be completed at least four weeks before a certificate is due to expire. A copy of the updated statement of attainment needs to be forwarded to Safety & Wellbeing at least two weeks before the expiry date of the current certificate, or payment of the first aid allowance will cease.

Section one

This section is completed by the person responsible to nominate first aid officers for a particular work area. Please refer to the First Aid section of your Faculty/Unit EHS Plan (via the Online Management System web site) to identify the position within your area with the responsibility for nominating First Aid Officers.

This section of the form allows for:

  • Nomination only

    A staff member who has a current Senior First Aid certificate / Apply First Aid statement of attainment, and who is being nominated to perform first aid duties.

  • Training and nomination

    A staff member to attend first aid training, and if certified, who is being nominated to perform first aid duties.

  • Re-certification

    A staff member to attend Apply First Aid re-certification training prior to the end of their period of certification.

Once this section is complete, the form is forwarded to the nominated staff member.

Section two

The staff member then contacts the training provider, St John Ambulance (NSW) - refer to their website http://www.stjohnnsw.com.au/ (opens an external site) - to find a suitable date, time and venue for training or re-certification. This should be done in consultation with their manager or supervisor and allowing a minimum of two weeks' notice.

This section can then be completed.

The fully completed form is forwarded to Safety & Wellbeing.

Safety & Wellbeing

Safety & Wellbeing then:

  • book the training or re-certification course with the training provider, and
  • confirm course details with the nominated first aid officer.

Safety & Wellbeing meets the course costs.
