Managing workload & how work is organised

Work organisation and the management of workloads are important issues that must be monitored and reviewed regularly. The components that make up an individual's workload vary according to work area and work activity.

Mutual expectations of staff members and supervisors should be developed as part of performance and development and work planning procedures. UTS managers and supervisors need to be mindful of the potential impact of workload demands on their staff, and the procedures for arranging workplace adjustment for staff with disabilities where this is required.

Staff are encouraged to take a period of annual leave each year to promote their health and wellbeing. This should be addressed during the annual workplanning process.

Risk management

It is important that supervisors and managers and their staff discuss workload and how work is organised through the performance and development process annually, and throughout the year as required.

Open and consultative processes for managing workloads, which take into account both the organisation's requirements and the individual staff member's needs and capabilities, can assist managers make the most of the skills and abilities of all their staff.

The Working Relationships & Workload Checklist for Managers and Supervisors (PDF, 132Kb) provides practical assistance and resources for addressing potential issues.
