Clinical and industrial placements

Clinical and industrial placements are situations where an academic supervisor organises for a student to attend the workplace of an external organisation acting as a work-based learning provider.

UTS staff who organise for students to work in clinical or industrial settings have a responsibility to ensure that the health and safety of these students is well managed.

The UTS student supervisor should request that the work-based learning provider (the supervisor of UTS students working in facilities outside of the control of UTS) complete the:

Significant health and safety hazards

If the clinical or industrial workplace has significant health and safety hazards, then in addition to having the external supervisor sign the declaration, the supervisor of the UTS student should:

  • discuss health and safety management system procedures with the external supervisor,
  • request the external supervisor to send evidence of these procedures, or
  • pay a site visit to check evidence of the health and safety management system themselves.
